THE CHRONOLEVER - SPECIAL NO.1

Below is an example of a Chronolever model which is a keyless lever wrist watch from the 1920's

These were classed as extra-superior movements, 18 caret ruby jewelled movement, cut compensation balance with hard-tempered steel hairspring, well made extra-substantial case. 

The featured moveable loops of same metal as the case (a design feature still found on the Sowar 1916 model today), damp proof and double domed glass. 

The chronolever model came with a 3 year guarantee. And was available to purchase at both the West End Watch Co. stores located at 49 Esplanade Road, Bombay AND 14 Dalhousie Square, Calcutta. 

Catalogue records indicate that this model would have retailed as follows in different case materials:

Nickel Silver: Rs 34
Sterling Silver: Rs 40 
9-ct Gold: Rs 70 
14-ct Gold: Rs 85
18-ct Gold: Rs 110
Radium Figures and Hands: Extra Rs 3

To give an idea of the value and affordability of these models at the time, a tola (10 gram) of 18-caret gold in 1925 was priced at Rs14 according to historical records.  And the 18-caret gold model of this watch retailed at Rs110 at the time. In todays terms, if a tola (10 gram) of 18 caret gold is priced at Rs 60,170, then this watch would retail at Rs481,000 currently. 

 A catalogue for this model from back in the day describe the model as follows: 

"This distinctive watch, represent out very latest creations and they exemplify our determination to keep in the van of watch-making progress.  The watch has been constructed with that attention to detail and finish which ensures the highest degree of consistent accuracy. The movements fitted are out latest chrono-quality and are jewelled with 18 finest rubies. The cases are very substantial and handsome, in every way worthy of the beautiful mechanism they protect. The sturdy build of these watches enables us to guarantee performance under all conditions of climate and usage". 

This particular edition/version of the Chronolever which is named Special No.1 could possibly have been specially produced by West End Watch Co. at the request of a business, company or stockist. Or may have been a commemorative model at the time for an occasion.  No more details or specifics are known about this Special No. 1 edition. This particular watch is still operational today and serves its wearer well.
